Where design intent meets turfgrass excellence.

Assistant Superintendent at the California Golf Club of San Francisco. From construction of Coore & Crenshaw's Brambles to championship conditioning at LACC, to the coastal creations of Cypress Point, Maidstone, and Tara Iti, my career has taken me to wonderful places and has introduced me to wonderful people, all while maintaining playing surfaces worthy of the architecture and history they serve.

About

Rooted in the craft

My path into turfgrass management started in a cart barn after graduating from UC Santa Barbara, and quickly became a lifelong pursuit. What began as a love for the game has evolved into a deep appreciation for exceptional turf conditioning and the history of golf course design.

I believe the best courses succeed where architecture, agronomy, and a sense of place work together. I grew up outdoors in Northern California, hiking and going to the beach often. My appreciation from a young age for the rugged natural beauty of this part of the world has translated into a regard for the "perfectly imperfect." Surfaces of golf that blend seamlessly from the areas touched by man to those touched by Mother Nature are those which hold my fascination. I believe we as superintendents should be stewards of the environment, pushing forward conscientiously to minimize inputs and maximize turf health, playability, and consistently great course conditions.

Oct 2024 – 2025

Tara Iti

Seasonal Greenkeeper (Intern/AIT)

Maintained exceptional fine fescue playing surfaces for a world-class membership in coastal New Zealand. Focus on moisture management and firm, true putting greens. Operated John Deere GPS sprayers on physically challenging terrain, with additional work on invasive species management in native areas.

Los Angeles Country Club

Assistant in Training

Heavy focus on managing creeping bentgrass putting surfaces at the highest level, creating firm, fast, dry conditions on a daily basis. Operated John Deere GPS sprayers across all non-green surfaces, spray-hawked greens weekly, and contributed to small drainage and irrigation projects.

Apr – Nov 2023

Maidstone Club

Intern

In addition to daily course set up and moisture management across all surfaces, completed leveling and expansion of teeing grounds for member play. Assembled and installed HDPE irrigation systems (butt-fusion and electrofusion) for a new croquet lawn. Played a central role in a practice facility rebuild including range deck leveling and irrigation/drainage installation.

Mar – Nov 2022

Cypress Point Club

Intern / AIT

Maintained premier playing surfaces for a world-class membership. Full scope of daily maintenance: mowing, fertilizer/herbicide/fungicide applications, aerification, topdressing, irrigation repair (Rainbird). 2020 – 2022

Brambles

Assistant Superintendent

Original design/build/grow-in. Started in construction (heavy machinery, shaping, irrigation & drainage), progressed through grassing (sprigging Zeon Zoysia tees/fairways/surrounds, Prizm greens), and into grow-in management. Became assistant to the grow-in superintendent, then served as interim superintendent from Oct 2021 – Feb 2022 — managing Toro Lynx systems, leading a skeleton crew through winter, and coordinating remotely with consultants on herbicide and watering programs. Where I realized that this dream job could become a dream career.

2018 – 2020

Claremont Country Club

Golf Department

Outside services, pro shop operations, and summer camp instruction. Where a love for the game was born.

The best part of this work is the people

My community has grown at every stop along the way, enriching my life both professionally and personally. The mentors who have lent their time and expertise, the crews who show up early with smiles on their faces, and the fellow agronomists who share my passion; they are the who, they help with the how, and provide the reason why I love to be a part of this industry.
